Itinerary
This is a sample itinerary. All activities largely depend on weather, season, group interests, and guide decisions based on passenger safety – so there might be changes to this itinerary, always in your best interest for a great amazon rainforest experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Coca & Lagoon Sunset
10.30 am – 2.00 pm
Upon arrival at Coca Airport (Francisco de Orellana), our driver will meet you directly at the terminal and assist you with your luggage. You will then begin a comfortable 3.5-hour drive to the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve entrance. Once you arrive you will meet your guide and a packed lunch will be provided .
2..00 pm – 4.00 pm
Your guide registers you at the entrance of the Cuyabeno Reserve and gives you general information and important safety instructions. Then you will board the canoe and get the first glimpse of the amazing amazon rainforest. During a 2 hour canoe ride down to Bamboo Lodge you get the first chance to observe amazon wildlife and vegetation. Once you arrive at Bamboo Lodge you move into your room an have a little break.
4.30 pm – 8.00 pm
After a short rest you head out in our light paddling canoes to explore the “Laguna Grande” (Big lagoon). You have a great chance to see the pink river dolphins and other wildlife and then you can swim in the middle of the famous “Laguna Grande” and enjoy your first jungle sunset. After dinner you go on a night expediton by engine canoe to seach for caymens and other night active animals.
Day 2: Explore Cuyabeno
If the tour starts on a Monday or Thursday:
9.00 am – 3.00 pm
Today is your full paddling adventure. After breakfast at the lodge, you head out on a long, peaceful canoe journey into one of the most pristine areas of the reserve: the Cañanbueno Lagoon, a highly protected zone where motorized canoes are not allowed.
Gliding silently through the flooded forest is an unforgettable experience, and without engine noise, your chances of observing wildlife are significantly higher.
You will carry a packed lunch from the lodge and stop in the forest for a break, with time for a short, guided walk.
The paddling journey continues through beautiful waterways until you arrive back at the lodge, where you can relax in a hammock and enjoy the sounds of the rainforest.
5.00 pm – 8.00 pm
Depending on the weather and your arrival time at the lodge, you may head out once more to Laguna Grande to enjoy a refreshing swim and another unforgettable Amazon sunset.
After dinner at the lodge, and if you still have energy, your guide will take you on a short night walk to discover the forest’s nocturnal life
9.00 am – 2.00 pm
If the tour starts on a Tuesday or Friday:
After breakfast, you travel down the Cuyabeno River by motorized canoe toward the Siona community of Puerto Bolívar. Along the way, your guide will help you spot Amazon wildlife such as monkeys, birds, snakes, and more.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by a Siona woman who will guide you through the traditional process of making cassava bread. You’ll begin by harvesting yuca together and then learn each step of preparing and cooking this important staple food of the community. Of course, you are invited to participate and taste the freshly made breadAfter your visit, you return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, you will head out for a guided jungle hike.
4.30 pm – 8.00 pm
Starting your walk in the late afternoon allows you to experience the transition from day to dusk in the rainforest. As the light softens and the temperature cools, the forest changes rhythm—daytime animals settle, while nocturnal species begin to stir.
Your guide will help you notice these subtle shifts in sounds and movement, pointing out tracks, calls, and details that reveal how the jungle prepares for nightfall.
Dinner will be served at the lodge.
Day 3: Sunrise, Wildlife & Return to coca
5.30am – 8.00am
Begin your day with a peaceful early-morning birdwatching session. At sunrise, the forest is at its most active, and from our birdwatching tower you may spot toucans, araçaris, oropendulas, and many more species greeting the day.
If the weather is favorable, you’ll head out by canoe to witness the sunrise over Laguna Grande—a stunning and unforgettable final moment in the heart of Cuyabeno.
Breakfast is served back at the lodge at 8:00 am.
8.00 am – 12.30 pm
After breakfast, your guide will lead you on your last jungle hike. Along the trail, you’ll walk through several forest types—terra firme, swamps, and flooded forest—while learning about the region’s ecosystems, wildlife, and the traditional uses of medicinal plants.
Although most wildlife sightings in Cuyabeno happen from the canoe, there is still a chance to encounter monkeys, deer, turtles, or other species along the hike.
Returning to the lodge, you’ll have time to pack and enjoy a final lunch before departure.
12.30 pm – 7.00 pm
It’s time to say goodbye to Bamboo Lodge. Your journey back begins with a canoe ride upriver, followed by a comfortable shuttle transfer to Coca.
Arrival at Hotel El Auka is planned for around 6:00 pm, where you can enjoy dinner and relax for the evening before your flight the next morning.
Day 4: Departure From Coca
7.00am – 9.00am
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at Hotel El Auka before your departure. Afterwards, the hotel will arrange your short transfer to Coca Airport (about 10 minutes). Drop-off is scheduled around 9:00 am, or adjusted to your exact flight departure time.
