What is the best time of year to visit Cuyabeno? What is the weather like?
Cuyabeno is a wonderful destination all year round. The rainforest doesn’t follow strict seasons, and weather patterns can change from year to year. Some months tend to be drier and others wetter, but even in the “dry” months it can rain, and in the “wet” months you can have clear, sunny days.
It’s also not very common for it to rain a whole day nonstop.
Most days are a mix of sun and rain, and the weather can change hour by hour, which is part of the unique Amazon atmosphere.
Each time of year offers something special:
-
Drier months (usually October, January, February) feel more adventurous, with good chances of spotting wildlife like caimans and anacondas.
-
Wetter months (all the other months) bring a lush, green landscape, full lagoons, spectacular sunsets, and perfect conditions for swimming in Laguna Grande.
No matter when you visit, you can expect a beautiful and memorable Amazon experience.
What vaccines do I need? Should I take malaria prophylaxis?
For travel in the Amazon, the yellow fever vaccine is generally recommended. However, there are no required vaccinations for your visit.
Fortunately our area is not affected by malaria, so taking malaria prophylaxis is not necessary.

🏡 at the lodge
Is there electricity at the lodge?
Yes. Bamboo Lodge is powered by a large central solar system, which provides electricity 24 hours a day throughout the lodge. You can comfortably charge your phone, camera, and other devices at any time.
As we operate in the heart of the rainforest, we kindly ask our guests to use energy mindfully, helping us protect this beautiful environment. But don’t worry — you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Do the rooms have fans or air-conditioning?
Our Superior Rooms and Premium Suites feature fans, offering a comfortable and natural way to cool down while staying connected to the surrounding environment. As an eco-lodge located deep in the Amazon rainforest, we do not offer air-conditioning.
Is there Internet at the lodge? Do I get a cellphone connection?
Yes, we offer Wi-Fi throughout Bamboo Lodge, and access is free for all guests. The connection is surprisingly good for such a remote location — stable enough for online work, calls, and even video meetings when needed.
Please note that there is no regular cellphone signal in the Cuyabeno Reserve, so Wi-Fi is the primary way to stay connected.
Are the beds and windows protected with mosquito nets?
Yes, all beds are protected with mosquito nets, and the windows are fully screened, ensuring a comfortable and restful stay. This applies to all room categories.
Do you have hot water showers?
Yes, we do! 😊 All our rooms are equipped with hot water showers.
Because we operate deep in the rainforest and rely on an eco-friendly system, the temperature can occasionally fluctuate. Our team checks the showers regularly, but sometimes the balance between hot and cold water can be a bit sensitive.
If you experience any difficulty during your stay — even something small — please don’t hesitate to let our staff know. We’ll be happy to assist you right away.
Are towels, soap, and shampoo provided?
Can special diets be accomplished?
Please let us know during your booking, so our cook can plan everything in advance and make sure you feel well taken care of during your stay.
🦜 Nature & Environment
Will we see wildlife? What animals can we expect?
Yes — Cuyabeno is one of the most wildlife-rich regions of the Amazon, and you will have many opportunities to observe animals in their natural habitat. While nature can never be guaranteed, our guests typically see a wide variety of species during the tour.
Some commonly spotted wildlife includes:
-
Monkeys (several species, such as squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and howler monkeys)
-
Pink river dolphins
-
Caimans
-
Anacondas and other snakes
-
Sloths
-
Toucans, macaws, parrots, and many other colorful birds
-
Frogs, including tiny poison-dart frogs
-
Turtles and butterflies
-
Giant otters
Your guide will help you observe animals respectfully and safely, and each day offers new surprises — no two Amazon experiences are ever the same.
Are there mosquitoes? What insect repellent should I bring?
There are mosquitoes in Cuyabeno, but usually fewer than in many other Amazon regions. All our rooms are equipped with mosquito nets on the beds and windows, ensuring a comfortable rest.
For insect repellent, the products available in local Ecuadorian pharmacies tend to work very well in the rainforest climate. We recommend “Detán” (green and white bottle), which is effective and widely used in the area. You can also purchase repellent at the lodge if needed.
Many guests find that buying repellent in Ecuador is more practical and more affordable, and often better suited to local conditions than bringing expensive international brands.
I have a strong fear of spiders or insects – will I encounter them in the lodge?
Our team does an excellent job keeping rooms and lodge facilities clean and well maintained, so insects and spiders are not common inside the rooms.
That said, we are in the middle of the rainforest, and on rare occasions a small “unexpected guest” like a spider or frog may find its way in. If that happens, our staff will assist you immediately.
If your fear is very strong, we recommend skipping the night walk activity, where you are most likely to see these creatures. Otherwise, most guests feel very comfortable during their stay.
What is the group size of the amazon tours?
During quieter seasons, groups are often smaller.
If you prefer an exclusive experience, we also offer private tours for families, couples, or tailored itineraries.
Is it safe in the Amazon?
Yes — visiting Cuyabeno with an experienced lodge and professional guides is considered very safe. Our team knows the area extremely well, and all activities are carried out with careful attention to safety and comfort. Canoe rides, walks, and wildlife observations are guided at all times, and we follow clear protocols designed for the rainforest environment.
While the Amazon is a wild ecosystem, serious incidents are extremely rare. As long as you follow your guide’s instructions — for example, staying with the group, not touching wildlife, and wearing boots in the forest — you can fully enjoy the experience without worry.
Most guests are surprised by how peaceful, calm, and secure they feel once they are here.
If you have specific concerns or health conditions, just let us know — we’re happy to help you feel comfortable and prepared.
